Then, try out the tool on your own and download the free NNLM Health Literacy Playbook, checklists and other health literacy resources.  

Beyond an Apple a Day: Providing Consumer Health Information at Your Library

This 4-week, 4 credit-hour self-paced online class covers the health information seeking behavior of consumers and the role of the librarian in the provision of health information for the public. Learn about the evolution of consumer health, health literacy and the e-patient, and expand your knowledge of top consumer health websites. We will discuss creative ideas for health information outreach in libraries, and wrap up by exploring effective marketing approaches and developing an elevator speech. Expect to spend at least 4 hours working on this class.

Bioinformatics and Biology Essentials for Librarians: Databases, Tools, and Clinical Applications

The 14-week, 30 credit-hour self-paced online class reviews basic biology concepts and takes a deep dive into NCBI Molecular Biology Databases. This class is designed both for librarians who offer, or intend to offer, bioinformatics services; and also for librarians who use gene and protein information on a periodic or irregular basis to serve their patrons.  Successful participants are invited to join an Alumni Forum which includes discussion and bi-monthly learning opportunities. Expect to spend at least 30 hours working through this class. 

Building Reference Skills for Nursing and Allied Health Research

This 3 week, 4 credit-hour self-paced online class is designed for library staff who support, or want to support, nursing and allied health professionals with NLM resources. This class provides an introduction to the professions of nursing and allied health, and explores NLM databases used by health professionals such as PubMed, LactMed, MedlinePlus and DailyMed. The class concludes with learners developing their own plan on how to use this information in their work.  Expect to spend about 4 hours learning in this class. 

Caring for the Mind: Providing Mental Health Information At Your Library

Responding to questions involving topics on mental health is challenging even for the most experienced librarian. In Caring for the Mind, participants will learn how to effectively provide mental health information at their libraries. Participants will learn about the reliable electronic resources to consult as well as ways to improve their print collections. Best approaches for handling interactions with emotional patrons will also be discussed.

CiteNLM Wikipedia Edit-a-thon

Join the Network of the National Library of Medicine as we add citations to Wikipedia articles using trusted National Library of Medicine resources like MedlinePlus and PubMed.  

NNLM Wikipedia edit a thons are held in Spring and Fall.

ClinicalTrials.gov for Librarians

ClinicalTrials.gov is the openly available federal registry and results database of publicly and privately funded clinical studies conducted in the United States and around the world. This 1-hour class is eligible for Consumer Health Information Specialization continuing education credit awarded by the Medical Library Association.

This 4 credit-hour, on-demand class reviews collection management principles and resources for health-related collections in public libraries. Watch a recorded presentation and complete 2 assignments to evaluate your own library's health collection, and consider how you can improve your health related materials to better serve your community. Includes a downloadable list of health information resources in .html and .docx format to customize for your library. Expect to spend up to 4 hours learning through videos and activities. 

Data Literacy for the Busy Librarian

This 2-week, 4 credit-hour, self-paced online class looks at foundational data management skills with an emphasis on key topics relating to Data Management Plans (DMPs), understanding standards and metadata in a biomedical context, identifying appropriate biomedical data repositories, understanding data sharing and data citation, and knowing and applying best practices in data visualization. Qualifies for MLA Data Services Specialization.

This is an online, asynchronous class.

Drug and Chemical Information - On Demand

Earn up to 6 hours of CE credit in this on-demand class. Learn about NLM resources that provide drug and chemical information for consumers and healthcare professionals, from interactions to adverse effects to clinical trial results. Your progression through this course can be tailored to your learning needs. Complete all 3 sections for an in-depth introduction to NLM drug and chemical information resources, or complete 1 or 2 of the sections for your specific population or commonly received questions.

This 1 credit-hour on-demand class introduces you to the basic concepts of medical terminologies (including what they are and why they are important), followed by a deep dive into RxNorm, an NLM-authored medical terminology specializing in drug information. Designed for health sciences librarians and other health information specialists seeking to serve more active roles in their health IT team and better support researchers. Expect to spend 1 hour learning through videos and exercises.

Effective Health Communication and Health Literacy: Understanding the Connection

How are health communication and health literacy connected? How can you be more effective in providing health information to consumers, patients, clients, library patrons and your community?  This 1 hour webinar introduces the concepts of health literacy and health communication, outlines components of clear health communication, and identifies online resources from NLM, government agencies and other recognized resources for health literacy and health communication.

Ethical Considerations of Data Mini-Course

MedlinePlus Connect is a tool that enables the integration of MedlinePlus resources into external systems like electronic health record systems, patient portals, and other applications.
