The Highs and Lows of Medical Cannabis, Opioids and Non-Opioid Pain Management
This Kernel of Knowledge webinar will provide perspectives of medical cannabis, opioids and non-opioid pain management by an early adopter physician in Illinois, Leslie Mendoza Temple MD, ABOIM. Dr Mendoza Temple is Clinical Associate Professor, Family Medicine at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. Since 2006, Dr. Mendoza Temple has served as Medical Director of the Integrative Medicine Program at NorthShore University HealthSystem. She is a board-certified Family Practitioner who cares for adults, children, pregnant mothers, and infants with a wide variety of conditions and preventive health needs. Dr. Mendoza Temple combines conventional Western medicine with safe, evidence-based complementary medicine therapies to improve the health of her patients. She leads a large team of talented, dedicated practitioners who work together to integrate some of the best of the world's medicine. Dr Mendoza Temple is also the former Chair of the Medical Cannabis Advisory Board for the Illinois Department of Public Health, appointed by former Illinois Governor Quinn. The objectives of this webinar: To familiarize the learner about the following aspects of cannabis: 1. Basic endocannabinoid physiology; 2. Therapeutic applications and risks of phytocannabinoids; 3. Medical cannabis and its potential impact on opioid prescriptions and spending; 4. Clinical experience on pain management with medical cannabis vs opioids vs non-opioids. Following Dr Leslie's presentation, Jacqueline Leskovec, MLIS, MA, RN will provide an overview of NIH and NLM resources related to medical cannabis and opioid misuse.
