Recent headlines have proclaimed that prolonged isolation is equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes a day. National and international studies have unveiled a startling truth: 50-80% of employees grapple with loneliness in the workplace. This phenomenon transcends borders, affecting employees worldwide. In libraries, this issue manifests as an acute sense of isolation, with staff feeling disconnected both from one another and from their professional purpose. Recognizing the urgency of this concern, this session aims to explore the causes and consequences of loneliness among library staff and provide practical strategies to create a more inclusive and supportive workplace environment.

Alejandro Marquez (he/him), is a Science and Engineering Librarian at the University of Denver Libraries. He also served in the Peace Corps in El Salvador where he worked as a Municipal Development volunteer. His research interests include library employee engagement and mental health.

● To facilitate discussions on the role of organizational culture, leadership, and policies in mitigating employee loneliness.
This webinar will increase information use and access and meet the NNLM's goal of supporting a highly trained workforce for biomedical and health information resources and data, improving health literacy, and increasing health equity through information. Loneliness is a social determinant of health. In 2021, NIH Director Francis Collins interviewed Dr. Vivek Murthy, the U.S. Surgeon General, about loneliness. In May 2023, United States Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy released a new Surgeon General Advisory calling attention to the public health crisis of loneliness, isolation, and lack of connection in our country. All registrants will receive helpful resources from NLM and NIH about loneliness and isolation.
