Description of Award

NNLM Region 4 is seeking member institutions to host an online workshop co-facilitated by The Carpentries ( Data Carpentry, Library Carpentry, or Software Carpentry) before April 30, 2024. There are 3 workshops available in Year 3. 

NOTES: 1) This opportunity is not considered an award but rather an opportunity to have the costs of a co-facilitated workshop with The Carpentries covered by the NNLM Region 4. 2) Region 4 is interested in working with groups operating outside of our nine states. For groups outside Region, some exceptions may apply. For question about these notes, please contact to discuss.

Workshop Opportunities:

  • Region 4 member institution (some exceptions apply to non-Region 4 groups) can play hosts, in coordinating with The Carpentries, to produce a workshop that engages data learners in their communities.
  • The Carpentries provides access to a community of data learners and teachers for workshops, collaborations, and sharable educational initiatives with the workshop host with the goal of enhancing research-computing practices of individuals engaging in those services.
  • Hosts can select the best Carpentries Lesson Programs for their communities, including Data Carpentry - Library Carpentry - Software Carpentry that are taught by a team of trained instructors.
  • The Carpentries assists in organizing the workshop, which includes locating and coordinating instructors.
  • The Carpentries helps with content used to publicize relevant activities by the workshop hosts, such as other training courses, software releases, and notable scientific successes.

ALERT! The Carpentries has limited capacity for the number of workshops being offer at a time and must be requested at least 2-3 months before your desired workshop date. When requesting your workshop, the workshop administrator will inform you if we have reached capacity for the dates requested. The Carpentries will work with you to best meet your needs.


NNLM Region 4 supports the National Library of Medicine in their pursuit to discover opportunities for building capacity in the library and information sciences community that will enable a diverse workforce to support data-driven research and promoting data literacy.

Network members hosting workshops supports the following NNLM Region 4 core aims:

  • Construct a rich culture built on a foundation of inclusive programming designed to attract and engage a diverse regional network through effective membership management.
  • Use community-driven approaches to increase access to health information.
  • Work through libraries and other members to support a highly trained workforce in biomedical, health information, and data science resources.
Proposal Requirements and Preferences


1. Workshop hosts must be current NNLM Region 4 members or have approval from the Region 4 Administration.

2. Email interest to host workshop to ASAP!

Interest email should include: 

 a. Member Institution Name or Group Name

 b. Primary point of contact information, if different from email author. Please include daytime phone number.

 c. Indicate number of workshop seat requested.

 d. Indicate if workshop will be in person or online.

 e. Describe how workshop supports improved information access to underrepresented populations in your community (see NNLM Overview, section "Underrepresented Populations" for details).

 f. Willingness to: 

  i. Schedule workshop with The Carpentries at least 3 months prior to desired workshop dates

  ii. All workshops conclude by April 30, 2024.

  iii. Coordinate with The Carpentries to: 

1) Recruit helpers, 2) Manage registration, 3) Communicate with a Carpentries liaison, 4) Provide adequate physical space for workshop (in-person) or online meeting space (e.g., Zoom) with someone with meeting facilitation expertise, and 5) Manage all promotion, communication, and follow-up with learners.

   iv. Report on workshop results with NNLM Region 4, including workshop evaluation data collected by The Carpentries about your workshop.  

3. First time members submitting interest to host workshop will be given priority.


Step 1: Network members interested in hosting a workshop are to schedule an appointment with to discuss the following:

  1. Workshop hosting responsibilities
  2. Workshop dates & venue
  3. Other NNLM Region 4 support available

Step 2: Network members interested in committing to host a workshop are to email stating they agree to: 

  1. Work with The Carpentries in finding workshop dates before
  2. Schedule and host the workshop before April 30, 2024.
  3. Comply with below described sections titled "Important Information" and "Reporting Requirements".

Step 3: NNLM Region 4 will email an agreement to the Network Member for review and acknowledgement of terms.

These workshops are intended for NNLM Region 4 member institutions but there may be exceptions. Please contact as soon as possible to discuss.

Priority Populations: NNLM Region 4 prioritizes services for member institutions working to address the health information needs of NNLM priority populations (see NNLM Overview, section "Underrepresented Populations" for details).

Important Information:

  1. In partnership the NNLM Center for Data Services, Region 4 covers the costs for The Carpentries facilitated workshop in coordination with a member host institution.
  2. Host institutions will be responsible to coordinate all workshop arrangements with The Carpentries.
  3. Hosts institutions are to acknowledge funding for the workshop was funded by the University of Utah with Federal funds from the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health, Department of Health and Human Services, under Cooperative Agreement Number UG4LM013732 with the University of Utah.   4. Online workshops are encouraged. If an in person workshop is more conducive there may be funds available to cover the instructor’s travel expenses through a Professional Development Award application. Contact as soon as possible.

Additional Information

Reporting Requirements

The following reports are required for NNLM sub-awardees:

  • Reports are concise descriptions of the workshop that the NNLM Region 4 uses to share event outcomes with the National Library of Medicine.
  • Instructions for reporting will be provided once the workshop host/hosts have been determined.
  • Reports are due within 30 days of the workshop.
  • Reports will be submitted through the online NNLM Data Reporting System.
  • Reports include collecting specific participant data (a form will be provided).
  • The workshop attendees are required to use the NNLM Training Evaluation Form to collect and share feedback on their training activities with NNLM (a form will be provided).
