Grant 437: Bridging Knowledge in Wayne County, NC

The primary goal of the Bridging Knowledge project is to increase both health and digital equity within Wayne County, NC by the use of grant-provided technology in a series of community partnership programs. This will be achieved by working with both the general community and new graduate nurses.  In community partnership with Wayne County Public Library, a series of classes will cover a variety of health literacy programs focusing on the National Library of Medicine (NLM) of MedlinePlus, ClinicalTrials.gov, and the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health. Emphasis will be on the reliability and trustworthiness of the resources as we strive to combat health misinformation, one of the initiatives of the Network of the National Library of Medicine (NNLM). To further develop nursing education, the project will supplement the current short nursing residency program with a year-long instruction period.  This additional period will be used to instruct students in the addition of evidence-based research into their field of practice, especially regarding social determinants of health. The aforementioned NLM resources will be utilized, as well as those more specialized such as PubMed and Open-i. By reaching the community both outside and inside the healthcare field, the Bridging Knowledge project will provide discussion opportunities to address medical misinformation and highlight authoritative and reliable health information sources.
