Staff Bio
Amos Glenn, EdD
Instructional Design Lead, NAPC
For over 20 years I have been researching, designing, and delivering rich learning experiences that produce measurable outcomes. The first 10 of those years were spent teaching children and adults in a variety of classrooms and in school administration, where my frustration with the gaps between the theory of learning and the praxis of teaching led to a deep interest in the ways that new computer-mediated tools and methods could improve the learning experience. After earning a doctoral degree, I left the classroom to begin researching and designing new ways of harnessing advancements in technology to create robust learning experiences that are effective, efficient, and enjoyable. My experiences as a researcher in Carnegie Mellon University’s Human-Computer Interaction Institute, working on the design of educational games and intelligent tutors, led me to focus on two areas: “learning engineering” and “precision learning.” Learning engineering expands on instructional design by applying the design processes of human-centered engineering and innovation to the theories and discoveries of Neuroscience, Psychology, and the other sciences of learning. Precision learning (or adaptive learning technology) finds ways to customize the learning experiences to an individual learner or intelligently adapts to learner behavior in real-time. In the past 5 years, I have focused on applying these processes to the education and training of physicians, researchers, and the general public around the subjects of biomedical research and public health.
