Tufts Health & Nutrition Letter: Nutrition 101 Glossary (link is external)

The National Cancer Institute provides the following precise, yet thorough, description of nutrition: The taking in and use of food and other nourishing material by the body. Nutrition is a 3-part process. First, food or drink is consumed. Second, the body breaks down the food or drink into nutrients. Third, the nutrients travel through the bloodstream to different parts of the body where they are used as "fuel" and for many other purposes. To give the body proper nutrition, a person has to eat and drink enough of the foods that contain key nutrients. (From The Dictionary of Cancer Terms (link is external), National Cancer Institute, U.S. National Institutes of Health)

The study of Nutrition Science is multidisciplinary and easily partnered with other research areas. Specialty areas such as biomedicine, agriculture, anthropology, social services, public policy, agriculture, humanitarian assistance, food and environment, health promotion, community and public health and disease prevention are often researched within a nutrition framework.

Nutrition science concentrates on the study of metabolic (metabolism and metabolic pathways) and physiological responses of the body to diet, along with the biochemical processes through which food substances change during metabolism.

Veterinary Extension to SNOMED CT (link is external)© - Veterinary Terminology Services Laboratory, Virginia Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, Virginia Tech: The SNOMED CT International release includes much but not all of the content required for veterinary health records, and for animal-related public health and biomedical applications. The Veterinary Extension of SNOMED CT (VetSCT) extends SNOMED CT with additional animal-specific content aligned and integrated with the international release.

AAHA Problem and Diagnosis Terms (link is external): The terms currently consist of approximately 5,600 clinical signs and diagnostic terms commonly used in companion animal practices in North America. They are completely mapped to SNOMED codes and are available in an XML format under reciprocal open-source licenses, without fee or royalty.

Dublin Core (link is external): "A basic, domain-agnostic standard which can be easily understood and implemented, and as such is one of the best known and most widely used metadata standards" (DCC (link is external) - Digital Curation Center).

Taxonomy Database – NCBI (link is external): The Taxonomy Database is a curated classification and nomenclature for all of the organisms in the NCBI public sequence databases, currently representing about 10% of the described species of life on the planet.

Veterinary Medicine Data Repositories

NIH Data Sharing Repositories (link is external): A list of over 65 NIH-supported repositories that make data accessible for reuse.

The Veterinary Medical Databases (VMDB) (link is external): VMDB has collected data on animal diseases since 1964 through member hospitals at North American Veterinary Colleges. The current database located at the University of Missouri, College of Veterinary Medicine stores abstracts of more than 7 million hospital records that are a compendium of all the cases at 26 universities.  Currently contributing member institutions have unlimited access for searching. Noncontributing member and non-member searches are available for a fee upon written request for specific topics.

World Animal Health Information Database (WAHIS) (link is external): The WAHIS Interface provides access to all data held within the World Organization for Animal Health's (OIE) new World Animal Health Information System (WAHIS) after 2004. It replaces and significantly extends the former web interface (Handistatus II System) that contains the pre-2005 data. Country-specific information includes including exceptional disease event reports, animal health status, veterinary services, population, vaccinations.  Data can also be approached by control measures or disease and visualized as disease distribution and outbreak maps.

Zoo Animal Databases and Associations Listing - Wild Welfare (link is external): The Zoological Information Management System (ZIMS) is the updated version of the International Species Inventory System (ISIS) listing the inventories of every zoo which is a member of the system.  You can make a specific inquiry for the species you are interested in via email.  They link to the Global Species : Institutions and Zoos collection created from the ISIS records up to the last year they were publicly available (2011) which can only by searched by zoo, not by species. The lists contain various errors due to mistakes in the ISIS records (e.g. “ghost entries”, incorrectly-inputted data, etc).

Approved Animal Drug Products (Green Book) (link is external): The Generic Animal Drug and Patent Restoration act requires that each sponsor of an approved animal drug must submit to the FDA certain information regarding patents held for the animal drug or its method of use. As of June 8, 2017, all Green Book reports are updated in their entirety on a monthly basis and are located on the Animal Drugs @ FDA website: https://animaldrugsatfda.fda.gov/adafda/views/#/search.  (link is external) Each section can be downloaded as Excel or PDF files.

Shelter Animals Count, the National Database (link is external): Shelter Animals Count exists to create an effective infrastructure for complete and accurate shelter reporting from more than 4000 shelters. It is a collaborative initiative formed by a diverse group of stakeholders to create and share a national database of sheltered animal statistics, providing facts, and enabling insights.  They publish data reports as well as provide a database for registered users. The data matrix looks at live intakes for Dogs and Cats and rolls up data into core intake and outcome types. Exploring the data uses Tableau to view and interact with shelter and rescue data, demographic and economic data by community and organization.

Dryad (link is external): Dryad hosts research data underlying scientific and medical publications, as well as researcher-submitted data, many of which involve animals and medicine. Data are linked both to and from the corresponding publication and, where appropriate, to and from select specialized data repositories (e.g. GenBank). Includes many types of files (e.g., text, spreadsheets, video, photographs, software code) including compressed archives of multiple files.

National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS) (link is external) – Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture: The USDA maintains many relevant surveys and data sets specific to animal health.  The NAHMS Program Unit conducts national studies on the health and health management of United States domestic livestock and poultry populations and makes the findings available as public reports in PDF.
